SKY is Sky's governance token. It replaced MKR, Maker's governance token, in September 2024: MKR converts to SKY at 24,000 SKY per MKR, and the MKR toggle on the supply chart shows how much has not yet been converted.
Holders can stake SKY in Lockstake. Staked SKY earns staking rewards, paid in USDS out of Sky's surplus and in SPK, can be delegated to vote, and can back a USDS loan (see the Direct Borrowing tab). The first Lockstake market took MKR and was wound down in 2025.
Sky also spends part of its surplus buying SKY in the market through the Smart Burn Engine. Before SKY, surplus went to MKR holders: surplus auctions burned MKR until 2022, and the Smart Burn Engine bought MKR in 2023 and 2024. Price, supply, holder and DEX figures are for SKY on Ethereum.
