World Liberty was founded in September 2024 by Steve Witkoff, Zach Witkoff, Chase Herro, Zak Folkman, and with the direct involvement of Donald J. Trump, Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Barron Trump in in Wilmington, Delaware. The project aims to promote US dollar-denominated stablecoins (USD1) and DeFi.
In late 2024, Trump's family obtained a 60% stake in the company according to Reuters.
In March 2025, World Liberty said it had raised $550M through the sale of the WLFI governance token.
