Mysterium Network is a secure, permissionless and censorship-resistant peer-to-peer network. Its main offering is a decentralized VPN service, Mysterium VPN. Residential internet users are incentivized to provide bandwidth to Mysterium Network by being paid with its utility token, MYST.

The project's aim is to provide users with an experience that improves upon existing privacy services like Tor. End users and enterprise customers are able to purchase anonymous, tamper-proof and encrypted internet access, but with the additional benefits of medium to high connection speeds.

History

Mysterium Network is headquartered in Switzerland with its development team located in Lithuania. It was founded in October 2016, followed by a 6,000 ETH seed funding round on December 16, 2016. A subsequent crowdsale was held on May 30, 2017, raising 14 million Swiss francs.

Mysterium Network launched its mainnet on Ethereum and Polygon in November 2021 after close to four years of testing. Its network has grown to over 20,000 active nodes within four months of its mainnet launch.

As of 2022, Mysterium Network is expanding beyond its VPN offerings with an open-source ecosystem of censorship-resistant products and services. New tokeneconomics is expected to be implemented within the same year, with the introduction of DeFi features including staking and delegation pools. Node operators will be required to stake MYST tokens, while receiving payments in the form of DAI stablecoin.
