Metaplex provides no-code tools to help Solana users create custom NFT marketplaces, attach metadata to their fungible and non-fungible tokens, and mint new NFT collections.
Metaplex was founded by Stephen Hess, Bartosz Lipinski, Austin Federa, and Nikhil Kumar. The team initially intended to build a decentralized finance protocol on Solana but quickly turned to the NFT sector after realizing the market’s potential. The idea was to create a product that meets the growing demand for a better and faster solution for NFT project management in a web3 fashion – no middlemen.
Metaplex’s first version was built in under six weeks to meet up with the fast-approaching 2021 Bitcoin Miami event. The platform broke at the launch of “The degenerate apes” NFT collection (its first major launch) and had to be rebuilt. This failure led to the design of the first Metaplex Candy Machine – a customizable smart contract designed to fit the criteria of any NFT launch. Candy Machine is only one of many tools in the Metaplex suite.
In the first quarter of 2022, Opensea announced the Solana integration powered by Metaplex. This integration granted Solana NFTs creators access to a broader market for their products, consequently creating more exposure for Metaplex. On April 1, Magic Eden integrated Metaplex Collection Standard. The integration enables users to verify the authenticity of an NFT with on-chain data.
The Metaplex foundation launch of donate.metaplex.com in support of Ukraine raised over $1 million. In January 2022, the project raised $46 million in a strategic funding round. Metaplex plans to be blockchain agnostic in its mission to scale NFT adoption.
