GateChain is a public blockchain platform focused on asset safety, decentralized finance (DeFi), and cross-chain capabilities. It features a unique Vault Account system for securing abnormal transactions, protecting against asset theft and private key loss. The ecosystem includes decentralized exchanges, a cross-chain protocol, and DeFi applications. GateChain also supports interoperable blockchain ecosystems and offers governance through GateChain DAO.

History

The GateChain token GT was introduced in April 2019 as the exchange's utility token. A portion of tokens are regularly burned (buy‑back and burn mechanisms) to reduce circulating supply over time. GT’s value is closely linked with the growth and performance of both the GateChain ecosystem and Gate.io exchange.

In September 2023, Gate.io's incubation program was created, aiming to foster industry growth. Gate Labs focuses on providing comprehensive support and resources to blockchain entrepreneurs.

In August 2025, Gate partnered with WLFI to launch the USD1 Points Program, offering users multiple avenues to earn points: by using USD1 in spot trading, converting other stablecoins to USD1, holding USD1 assets, or participating in USD1-related Launchpad or Earn projects.

In October 2025, a major upgrade was launched - GateLayer - as High-Performance L2 Network, built on the OP Stack and fully EVM‑compatible, which uses GateChain as its settlement layer and supports fast, low‑cost transactions. It offers fast transactions, low fees, and EVM compatibility, aiming to support scalability for decentralized applications and enhance the utility of the GT token within the broader Gate ecosystem.
