Degen is a community-centered meme token used by the members of Farcaster’s “Warpcast,” a Web3 social media platform similar to “X” (formerly Twitter). Initially used to tip and reward subscribers of just the “/degen” channel on Warpcast, the DEGEN token has started to be used throughout the rest of the platform.

Warpcast users can tip other users for posting by commenting "[tip amount] $DEGEN” (e.g., "100 $DEGEN”) on a given post. Only users that have (i) linked a wallet to Warpcast, (ii) posted at least three original casts, and (ii) have a minimum of 10,000.00 DEGEN in the linked wallet are granted a daily tip allowance. Users that receive DEGEN tips can claim the tokens at the end of each month.

History

The DEGEN token was launched in January 2024 by Jacek Trociński as a tipping and reward token for subscribers of the Warpcast “/degen” channel, a community hub for enthusiasts, developers, and content creators in the crypto industry. Tokenholders use DEGEN to tip each other for posting content across Warpcast, and the token has been integrated into several other applications to serve as tipping features or a medium of exchange.

DEGEN was initially deployed on Jan. 7, 2024, as an ERC-20 equivalent token on Base. However, the token has since been bridged to Degen Chain, a Layer-3 network in which DEGEN serves as the native token. Degen Chain was built by Syndicate.io and was released on March 28, 2024. The stated purpose of Degen Chain is to enable "experiments with tipping, community rewards, payments, gaming, and much more.” A commercially reasonable search found no further information regarding the intended features or plans for Degen Chain.
