About

Contango facilitates on-chain trading through a mechanism called "looping." It operates by borrowing assets from money markets, swapping them on spot markets, and lending them back on the same money markets to create leveraged positions.

Contango provides two interfaces: a Simplified version for beginners and an Advanced version for experienced users. It enables use cases such as leveraging liquid staking tokens, arbitraging rate differentials, and farming rewards or points.

History

Contango was founded in 2021 by Kamel Aouane, Egill Helgason, and Bruno Bonanno. The project emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic when the founding team identified an opportunity to bring cash-and-carry arbitrage strategies from centralized exchanges to DeFi. The protocol was initially incubated by AlphaDAO (now Alpha Venture DAO), which received a 3% token allocation for its early support.

In July 2022, Contango raised $4M in a round led by ParaFi. The project launched its first version in Q4 2022 on Arbitrum, built on top of Yield Protocol's fixed-rate markets. This initial implementation focused on expirable futures contracts, allowing users to trade dated futures in a decentralized manner.

The protocol underwent a significant architectural shift with v2, which was deployed in August 2023, and went public by November 2023. Contango v2 introduced "cPerps" (Contango Perpetuals) - perpetual-like positions created through automated looping strategies on money markets like Aave, combined with spot market liquidity. The v2 launch marked Contango's expansion to a multi-chain protocol, initially deploying on Arbitrum before expanding to Optimism, Ethereum mainnet, Polygon, Base, and Gnosis.

In January 2024, Contango integrated with Morpho Blue and Silo, two isolated lending markets that enabled traders to loop on exotic assets like Pendle's Principal Tokens (PTs) and Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs) at high leverage. By March 2024, Contango added support for MakerDAO pools on Morpho, enabling looping on Ethena's sUSDe and USDe against DAI.

In June 2024, Contango announced the oTANGO airdrop, introducing an innovative option token mechanism designed to prevent token dumps. In October 2024, Contango published its TANGOnomics model, detailing a token design focused on boosting liquidity and incentivizing ecosystem growth through staking mechanisms. At the same month, Contango conducted a $3M public sale through Fjord Foundry's fixed-price mechanism at $0.045. Furthermore, October also brought the Contango v3 upgrade, which brought efficient on-chain price discovery through “Continuous Double Dutch auctions” (CDDA).

In January 2025, Contango partnered with DIA to deploy a robust price feed for TANGO on Arbitrum, enabling seamless conversion of oTANGO options tokens to TANGO within the protocol.

Between Q1 and Q3 2025, the team focused on growth. Throughout February and March, the protocol also maintained its seasonal points program, incentivizing users to loop DeFi assets and engage in cross-chain leveraged trading. Their TANGO token launched on October 21, reaching $5.7M market cap with 105.4M tokens circulating.

In November 2025, the Contango team announced TANGO buybacks to be initiated using protocol fees. The announcement comes as an update to the team's statement regarding the protocol's contagion risk from the Balancer V2 exploit.
