About

Agoric is a blockchain platform designed to simplify the development of decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. Built on the Cosmos ecosystem, it operates as a Proof-of-Stake chain and emphasizes accessibility for developers by using JavaScript. Agoric’s framework includes tools like Hardened JavaScript, which enhances security, and the Zoe framework, which ensures "offer safety" by escrowing assets during transactions to minimize risks.

The platform aims to enable seamless multi-chain interactions through its Orchestration API, facilitating interoperability across blockchains. Agoric’s native token, BLD, is used for staking and governance, while its ecosystem integrates with Cosmos via the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.

History

Agoric Open Systems In 1988, Mark S. Miller (MarkM) co-authored the Agoric Open System papers, which laid out a vision of decentralized computational markets that would extend the world of human cooperation. The papers emphasized the role of object capabilities (ocaps) as a foundation for computational markets, the importance of using market mechanisms to allocate computational resources, and the benefits of using economic incentives in aligning interests in software.

Road to Agoric Over the next 15 years, MarkM and Dean Tribble, the CTO at Agorics Inc., merged forces to focus on real-world systems, including the first electronic check project for the Financial Services Technology Corporation, and a brokerage information system for Charles Schwab. MarkM was also developing the open-source E language and leading the Caja project at Google, bringing ocap ideas to web security. In the same timeframe, Dean was a principal architect at Microsoft, where he brought the ocap approach to the Midori secure, distributed operating system. MarkM became active and influential on the ECMAScript standards committee and helped drive important additions to create a secure subset of JavaScript, called SES: Secure ECMAScript.

Agoric Today Founded in 2018, Agoric realizes the combined efforts of Mark S. Miller, Dean Tribble, Bill Tulloh, and Brian Warner. Focused on composable decentralized finance (DeFi), the company pulled from past work to develop a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain protocol with JavaScript smart contracts. The result is a platform for mainstream developers to build and deploy dApps and DeFi markets in a familiar environment.

The Agoric chain also contains built-in decentralized finance (DeFi) primitives, allowing Agoric to support a secondary, stable token for facilitating economic activity and staking rewards in response to the network's economic growth.

By November 2021, Agoric launched its public chain (Mainnet Phase 0, the first of 4 phases). Mainnet 0 is the Cosmos level of the chain which allows for staking and governance. Milestones in the mainnet progression include phased upgrades, such as the Mainnet-1B upgrade in March 2023, which introduced an enhanced virtual machine (VM), new oracle infrastructure, and support for IST stablecoin vaults.

In July 2024, the Orchestration API was introduced, and by April 2025, it was facilitating one-click cross-chain asset movement, automation of complex DeFi actions, and powering products such as Fast USDC, which allows rapid USDC transfers from EVM to Cosmos in under one minute.

In Q3 2025, the project underwent a whitepaper refresh, updating tokenomics to reflect the product-led roadmap and new strategic focus.
