Zcash Trademark Talks Were About More Than a Logo

On Wednesday November 6 the Electric Coin Company (ECC) officially shared the zcash trademark with the Zcash Foundation (ZF). The resolution came after months of contentious discussion that according to Zcash Foundation director Josh Cincinnati, was part of the political growing pains associated with decentralization. At the heart of the issue was the Zcash community wanting to transfer power from their benevolent leaders to the community, part of which involves reducing the ECC’s power.

Why it matters:

  • The Zcash community is in the midst of an intense process regarding the future of the Zcash developer’s fund and Zcash governance. The trademark resolution is a notable milestone on this path to an agreement.
  • Decentralizing later is something every cryptocurrency project claims it will do eventually. The Zcash governance discussions show just how hard this process may be.
