Why Solana Mobile Should 100x Their Phone Production

Overview

Solana Mobile is a highly ambitious foray into the mobile consumer hardware market, seeking to open up a crypto-native distribution channel for mobile-first applications. The market for Solana Mobile devices has demonstrated a phenomenon whereby external market actors (e.g. Solana-native projects) continuously underwrite subsidies to Mobile consumers. The value of these subsidies, coming in the form of airdrops, trial programs, and exclusive NFT mints, have consistently covered the cost of the phone and generated positive returns for consumers. While initial demand for the phone seemed lackluster, Solana Mobile closed its first year on the market with 20K units purchased and over 140K units pre-ordered, demonstrating strong growth. These subsidies have not been a fluke, but rather, a persistent feature in the market for Solana Mobile devices. With these subsidies in play, demand for Mobile devices is substantially larger than what headline price and sales numbers would reveal. Given this trend in subsidies, the unit economics in the market for Mobile devices, and the initial growth rate and trajectory of sales, it should be expected that Solana mobile can clear 1M to 10M units over the coming years. As more devices circulate amongst users, Solana Mobile presents a promising venue for the emergence of killer-applications uniquely enabled by this mobile-first, crypto-native distribution channel.

The Device

The device features a number of hardware and software specifications for improved security and user-experience related to crypto-native use cases. These include a dApp store for web3 mobile applications, support for the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), and a built-in Seed Vault. The Seed Vault functions as an embedded hardware wallet for seed phrase security, where keys remain encrypted in a secure element of the device at rest. All processing involving the private keys occurs in the trusted execution environment, utilizing Qualcomm’s secure execution, which is run on the processor separate from the main execution of the system. Here, the private keys are not observable to the Android operating system or the Linux kernel. Additionally, the trusted user-interface allows the trust zone to take control of the display and its inputs away from the Android operating system when signatures are required. Users can sign transactions with a password or biometrically with a fingerprint.

The SMS stack gives application developers a toolkit to simplify building dApps on the Android OS. This SDK is extensible for React Native, Flutter, Unity, and the Unreal Engine, letting existing mobile application developer talent tap into this stack with ease. The Mobile Wallet Adapter (MWA) allows dApp developers to run one integration with the MWA protocol to offer support for all MWA-compatible mobile wallets with a single API integration. This stack intends to reduce frictions and barriers for mobile developers shipping applications to the dApp store.

The dApp store offers users a curated venue to access crypto-native mobile applications. Anyone can deploy a dApp without permission, where it is published on-chain as an NFT and remains accessible to users. To be featured in the dApp store, however, applications must make a submission for approval to be whitelisted by the Solana Mobile team. While the device supports the Solana blockchain out of the box, it is ultimately chain-agnostic, and can support applications related to any blockchain.
