Web Assembly (WASM)

Written by Max Hinchman

Introduction

WebAssembly is a new code developed by W3C that provides major performance upgrades and is more mobile compatible. This new code will be particularly useful for new high-performance web apps, video editing, and any scientific visual representations. However, over time traditional web applications are expected to adopt WebAssembly because of it will also improve performance and reduce load times. WebAssembly is a code that meant to be complementary to Javascript and provide a performance boost in the areas that Javascript lacks.

The main benefits of web assembly include faster speed. The startup speed is a where most of the difference is noticed immediately. Developers are surprised with how quickly users can experience the impact of the application through a web browser with WebAssembly. You can also compile multiple languages to build an application. WebAssembly gives developers the freedom to write an application in one language and having the web browser allow to run on anything. The original goal of the WebAssembly development team was to run a develop a code that could safely run Javascript and other languages at near native speeds. Because it is a binary code, WebAssembly is orders of magnitude more efficient and faster. The binary code gives it an added level of security and will also allow seamless integration with all browsers.
