Art is an underrated asset class. The outstanding value of artwork – the market capitalization – is estimated to be in excess of $1.7 trillion, with annual sales of art in the $30-50 billion range.
The argument for investing in art as an asset class is clear – art has outperformed the S&P 500 over the past 25 years and is uncorrelated with other asset classes yielding benefits from a portfolio diversification standpoint.

On a longer time scale, contemporary art has outperformed the equities markets during times of high inflation (nothing to see here).
