Primer

Open Campus is a Web3 education ecosystem publicly announced in 2023 that seeks to address challenges in global education, like limited access to quality learning, undercompensation of educators, and unreliable credential verification. The platform enables educators to tokenize content for direct monetization, while providing learners with verifiable onchain credentials and access to decentralized student financing. Its ecosystem of education-focused apps connects students and educators, supports skill-building courses, and rewards learning achievements.

At the core of Open Campus’ infrastructure is EDU Chain, a Layer-3 (L3) blockchain built on the Arbitrum Orbit framework and launched in January 2025. EDU Chain is purpose-built to host education-focused apps, enable onchain education finance (EduFi), and provide the infrastructure for credential issuance and content transactions. Learners can engage with apps on EDU Chain, own their achievements as verifiable credentials, and access globally funded student loans with transparent, onchain terms. Complementing EDU Chain are Publisher NFTs (pNFTs), which allow educators to tokenize and monetize educational materials, and Open Campus ID (OC-ID), a protocol for issuing decentralized identifiers that store an immutable record of a learner’s academic history across Web2 and Web3 platforms.

The Open Campus DAO governs the protocol through EDU tokenholder voting, with a five-member council elected annually to oversee key decisions. Strategic partners such as Animoca Brands and TinyTap contribute to ecosystem growth, while the Open Campus Accelerator, operated by NewCampus, focuses on onboarding startups and institutions.

Key Metrics

Performance Analysis

Token Price and Circulating Market Cap

EDU is the native governance and utility token of the Open Campus ecosystem. It supports governance through the Open Campus DAO and serves multiple transactional and functional roles across EDU Chain. EDU’s quarter-closing price increased 15.8% from $0.12 in Q1 to $0.13 by the end of Q2 2025. The circulating market capitalization rose in tandem, up by the same percentage from $30.0 million to $34.7 million. EDU’s circulating market cap ranking improved modestly over the quarter, moving from 496th to 479th.

EDU Chain Transaction Activity

EDU Chain has processed over 84.4 million transactions since its mainnet was released to the public on Jan. 17, 2025. After a strong first quarter with elevated activity, the number of transactions processed during Q2 dropped 96.4% QoQ to 2.9 million. Average daily transactions fell by the same percentage to about 32,300 from approximately 903,500 in the prior quarter.

EDU Chain User Activity

Average daily active users on EDU Chain declined 70.7% QoQ, falling from approximately 4,600 in Q1 to 1,600 in Q2 2025. Average daily new users dropped more sharply, down 96.5% QoQ from around 2,418 to 86 over the same period. Despite the slowdown in new user growth, the cumulative number of user accounts increased from 179,000 to about 186,800 by quarter-end. Factors that may have contributed to this decline include reduced Yuzu Point rewards, which decreased participation from casual or opportunistic users, along with a post-launch normalization after the heightened activity seen in Q1.

EDU Chain Deployed Contracts

The total number of contracts on EDU Chain increased 19.1% QoQ to 26,000 by the end of Q2 2025. Verified contracts rose from 526 to 625, though the QoQ growth rate slowed to 18.8%, representing a 66.1% decline from the prior quarter’s pace. In line with this trend, average daily new contract deployments declined 80.8% QoQ from approximately 239 in Q1 to 46 in Q2. This contraction likely reflects reduced developer activity following the initial post-launch period and a shift in focus toward maintaining or upgrading existing apps rather than deploying new contracts.

Pencil Finance receives $10 million grant

In Q2 2025, Pencil Finance established a $10 million fund provided by Animoca Brands and Open Campus to underwrite loan capital on the platform. This fund is designed to underwrite principal and interest payments for early investors, safeguarding investments up to this amount and providing additional confidence as the platform scales. The initiative directs capital toward underserved student populations while creating transparent, yield-generating opportunities for both retail and institutional DeFi participants. Lending partners can tokenize student loan packages with parameters such as term length, interest rate, and repayment schedule, listing them as investable pools on the platform. Prospective investors can then explore these pools, assess risk-return profiles through tranche selection, and participate by purchasing fractional shares of bundled loans.

OC Incubator (OC-I) Season Two Concludes

The Open Campus Incubator (OC-I) is a 12-week remote program that supports developers of winning projects from the Hackathon Series in building and scaling apps on EDU Chain. The program offers structured training in product development, marketing, and community engagement, pairing participants with industry mentors and providing access to funding opportunities. In Q2 2025, OC-I completed its second cohort, which included 14 winning projects across DeFi, EduFi, infrastructure, gaming, and learning applications. Over the course of the program, participants refined their products and concluded with a Demo Day showcasing their work to mentors, partners, and potential collaborators.

The framework supports configurations for online learning marketplaces, gig economy platforms, and assessment systems, and can be deployed within minutes without requiring extensive technical resources.

OC Kickstart includes integrated features such as Open Campus ID for authentication, Open Campus Achievements for credential issuance, an administrative portal, and team management tools. It also offers white-label customization for branding and user interface adjustments while maintaining a standardized backend. The initiative is intended to reduce development time and costs for new projects, while increasing utilization of EDU Chain infrastructure within education and skills-focused applications.

FlowEDU Launch
In Q2 2025, the EDU Chain ecosystem introduced FlowEDU, an automated cross-chain bridge for EDU tokens operating between EDU Chain and BNB Chain. The service addresses common challenges in asset transfers, including multiple transaction steps, network switching, and the need for native gas tokens on several chains.

FlowEDU employs a wallet binding system and backend automation to complete transfers through a single deposit. Once a user sends EDU to a unique FlowEDU address, the system manages gas provisioning, executes the transfer through LayerZero OFT and Arbitrum bridging contracts, and delivers the tokens to the bound wallet on the destination chain. A protocol fee of 0.3% applies to each transaction. The tool streamlines EDU transfers across chains and increases accessibility to EDU Chain’s ecosystem

EDU Chain partners with thirdweb

In Q2 2025, EDU Chain partnered with thirdweb, a Web3 development platform that provides AI tools, developer infrastructure, and blockchain data services. The integration creates a full-stack development environment tailored to EDU Chain that enables faster application deployment and supports scalable operations.
