A seamless developer experience is non-negotiable to attract developers from other Web3 ecosystems and traditional gaming studios. Developers need access to tools to enhance user experience for an ecosystem to flourish. StarkNet is an Ethereum Layer-2 that offers some of these tools that can help developers build out better products for users. As a result, it's become a prime destination for gaming applications, especially as it builds on StarkWare's existing focus on gamers.
Cairo 1.0 and DevEx
Cairo is a smart contract language developed by the StarkWare team. While this Turing-complete language has had increased usage in the past year, it has yet to surpass Solidity or Vyper in popularity. Due to its novelty, Cairo is harder to use and is specific to StarkWare. Currently, Cairo accounts for only 6% of total TVL used for smart contracts, close behind Rust-based contracts.

On January 5, the StarkWare team announced the release of Cairo 1.0. This new version is designed to be more developer-friendly by drawing inspiration from Rust, a popular language for general programming. As Rust is a relatively new language with a strong reputation for usability, developers already familiar with it will find it easier to work with Cairo 1.0. This familiarity will facilitate the development of toolkits and further standardize the developer experience with the language.
