All investors rely on similar qualities. Two of the most important are conviction and judgment. Judgment, is related to the investments you select while conviction, relates to sizing one’s position – how certain are you in a particular investment based on your evaluation.

But one of the less-discussed attributes of investing is “access”, mostly because access is not a variable the average investor has control over. In the equity markets, access is limited to the products offered on Robinhood, your deal flow in private equity, or your access to information. In most markets, the lack of access can be a non-starter to investors with the best judgment and strongest conviction. It doesn’t matter if an investor thought Coinbase was a home run waiting to happen if they couldn’t invest in its venture rounds on the private markets. Thankfully, crypto somewhat alleviates this third barrier since access to most cryptoassets comes years earlier than in the private markets.

Some of the best networks have launched directly to their communities, whether it be Bitcoin, Yearn, or other networks. This naturally helps enthusiast investors or developers who are deep in a community and know the ins and outs as opposed to a large fund looking at dozens of term sheets each day.
