Going Poly-market

Prompt

Prediction markets, in general, and Polymarket, in particular, aren’t new to crypto. Still, they have gained traction lately, with users speculating on various events like ETF approvals, election results, and war outcomes. Polymarket has recently reached multi-year highs in volumes, users, and open interest. Will Polymarket continue its strong momentum, and will crypto’s incessant speculation be its killer use case?

Primer

Polymarket is a decentralized prediction market on Polygon that works similarly to a decentralized exchange like Uniswap V2. All markets are deployed with a constant product automated market maker similar to a Uniswap V2 pool. Users can speculate on future results by trading against the liquidity pool or can provide liquidity to earn trading fees.

However, unlike Uniswap V2, every Polymarket pool has a fixed period after which it must settle in favor of one of its constituent tokens. Typically, a UMA optimistic oracle resolves the market. This result is backed by a cryptoeconomic bond but can be challenged by any user by posting a counter bond. In such a case, UMA’s arbitration process or Data Verification Mechanism (DVM) kicks in to settle the market. An interesting example of a contentious result was the winner of Time’s Person of the Year in 2022, which is detailed in this UMA blog.
