Game Changers: How Chiliz is Improving Sports Fan Engagement

Sports transcend borders. Every four years the World Cup draws billions of viewers and tens of billions of dollars. Passionate world cup fans experience heartbreak and euphoria, dreaming that their team, their country will be victorious. And even though the fans are the most important part of the game, they aren’t rewarded for their fandom. What if fans could have a say in their favorite teams?

Like crypto communities, football clubs are downright tribal with millions of diehard fans around the world. All of the top ten football clubs are worth more than most DeFi protocols, some several times over. With Real Madrid valued at over $4 billion, the notion of combining sports and crypto incentivizes is mouth-watering. After all, if there’s an incentive to be gamed, there’s a token waiting to be minted.

Chiliz: Improving Fan Engagement and Enabling New Revenue Models

One recent project at the intersection of sports and crypto is Chiliz, a company building the Chiliz exchange – which runs on the Chiliz blockchain – and the Socios fan engagement platform. Chiliz has already partnered with ten international football clubs like FC Barcelona and Juventus to create new loyalty tokens to engage fans.

The Socios fan-voting platform (mobile and web app) sits on top of the Chiliz permissioned Proof-of-Authority blockchain and utilizes the native Chiliz (CHZ) token. While users can purchase CHZ in the Socios app, the Chiliz.net exchange (not available to U.S users) facilitates the trading of fan tokens. CHZ main value proposition derives from being the sole currency that powers the Chiliz exchange and the Socios app.
