Friend.tech: Reimagining the Web3 Social Stack

Friend.tech, an innovative social application, recently launched on Base, Coinbase's new Layer-2 solution. Friend.tech enables users to purchase shares of Twitter influencers, granting them exclusive access to private group chats with these social media personalities — a fresh and engaging approach to interaction and monetization in the decentralized social sector.

Following the announcement of seed funding from Paradigm on August 18, friend.tech witnessed a massive surge in user adoption. In just over a week, friend.tech has attracted over 80,000 unique users.

The rapid rise of friend.tech can be distilled to two pivotal factors: a strategic go-to market and its novel application concept.

First, the project was propelled into mainstream prominence via engagement with crypto Twitter influencers. With the platform effectively assigning a monetary value to each influencer, a dynamic and spirited competition among these influencers emerged, resulting in increases to their share value. Moreover, a portion of trading volume fees is funneled to the influencers themselves, thereby intertwining their financial interests with the success of friend.tech. In turn, this encourages influencers to amplify their promotional efforts.

The second pillar of friend.tech's success is its innovative tech stack, which includes several core features:

  • Progressive Web App (PWA): Friend.tech, as a PWA, delivers an app-like experience through web browsers on mobile devices. This design sidesteps the need for users to download the app from the App Store or Google Play. It also artfully circumvents the fees typically imposed by these platforms, without compromising on the mobile app experience.
