Historically, Solana has relied on a single token program to power the majority of both their fungible and non-fungible tokens. A single standard enables developers to share common infrastructure, which quickens the pace of development and strengthens security. However, it places the onus on developers to create custom, bespoke code if they wish to extend the functionality embedded within a token. Additionally, the wider application ecosystem must then make the required upgrades and integrations to support new functionality.
Solana’s new token program, Token Extensions (FKA Token-2022), stems from this tension introduced by the desire to experiment with new token designs while minimizing the disruption to application developers and potential security concerns.
