ETH Staking Custody, Management, and Correlation Risks

Key Insights

  • Ethereum staking penalties purposefully disincentivize the centralization of stake.
  • Still, the majority of staked ETH is represented by just a handful of staking-as-a-service providers.
  • While this may seem concerning, it's important to consider additional nuances when evaluating ETH staking decentralization.
  • Decentralized stake management is crucial to ensure that no single entity can impact the network. However, at present, infrastructure concentration may pose the greatest threat to Ethereum.

The primary goal of Ethereum validators is to ensure the secure, decentralized operation of the network. To this end, in-protocol rules purposefully disincentivize the centralization of stake. Slashing penalties become more severe the more validators participate in the same event, and any failure or malicious action that affects more than ⅓ of validators prevents the network from reaching finality. In such cases, offending validators increasingly shed ETH until a supermajority of honest, operational validators is met once more.

Still, the majority of staked ETH is controlled by just a handful of staking-as-a-service providers. Specifically, Lido, the top staking-as-a-service provider represents nearly 30% of staked ETH, while Coinbase, the next largest leader, accounts for just over 13%.
