The Internet is Suboptimal

The internet is a suboptimal networking layer for high performance distributed systems. 

First, there is no true priority market for packet delivery, as packet routing is ISP contract-driven, not latency‑driven. On the public Internet, most traffic is best-effort only. Packets are routed according to commercial agreements, not the shortest or fastest routes. This leads to highly suboptimal packet routes and inconsistent delivery times for latency sensitive use cases. A packet from New York to London can detour through Frankfurt if that’s the cheapest contractual hop, for example. 

The market’s answer to these drawbacks has historically been privately owned infrastructure for dedicated bandwidth, optimized for the use case in question. HFT shops run private fiber networks straight to stock exchanges. Ad giants Google and Meta both run private undersea cables to ensure dedicated bandwidth and consistency of service. Large content distribution networks (CDNs) are built and maintained so that files are copied across many geographies to ensure efficient delivery of in-demand content.

These solutions, however, have been unavailable to high performance blockchains, subjecting them to uncertain variability in ping times, unnecessarily high validator overhead, and high uncertainty for searchers. In times of high market volatility, single validators receive GBs in indiscriminate duplicate transactions from searchers and traders vying to capture profit opportunities on sub second time horizons. Searchers and traders face extreme uncertainty around deliverability of transactions, which incentivizes spam, damaging the efficiency of high performance blockchains. Crypto needs a dedicated private bandwidth solution.
