BNB Chain Announces 2023 Roadmap

Top of Mind

On February 14, BNB Chain released its 2023 technical roadmap, which outlines key initiatives to complete by year-end. This includes increasing the network's gas limit from 140 million to 300 million, which will enable processing of up to 5,000 transactions per second. BNB Chain also plans to further decentralize by increasing the number of validators from 29 to 100.

In addition to incremental updates, the roadmap highlights several zero-to-one initiatives that could have a big impact, such as increased scalability through modular architecture, creation of a data storage network, and push towards mass adoption infrastructure. The roadmap also includes the implementation of consumer protections by blockchain security firms. Several of these initiatives have been covered in past Messari reports, which are linked where applicable.

For example, the increase in expected validators has led to validator service providers such as 48 Club, a BNB Chain DAO, seeing user counts jump 3,140% in the seven days following the announcement.

Data Storage Economic Network (BNB Greenfield)

One major announcement made by BNB Chain was the launch of BNB Greenfield, a decentralized storage network. Decentralized storage has become an emerging use case for the blockchain industry, riding on the back of a cloud storage industry projected to grow 29% annually until 2029.

BNB Greenfield will function as a separate Proof-of-Stake blockchain, like its peers, but it will use the BNB token for staking, transactions, and governance. Validators on the network are expected to host transaction metadata and complete the necessary actions to pull user data requests from storage providers through the native cross-chain BNB Chain and BNB Greenfield bridge.
