Arweave: Permanent Decentralized Data Storage

The appeal of storing data with unused hardware distributed across many devices has attracted countless astute builders and investors to the value proposition of blockchain. However, using a traditional blockchain like Ethereum for storage is prohibitively expensive for the average consumer. In 2014, Sia introduced the concept of a blockchain specifically designed for data storage. Today, market leaders in the space storage include Arweave and IPFS. Despite being one of the earliest explored applications of blockchain, decentralized data storage has yet to achieve the same extent of adoption or speculative investing as other sectors such as DeFi and NFTs.

One drawback to the traditional internet is the reliance on centralized data storage providers to host information. These entities have the ability to revoke access, alter data, or stop storing data altogether. Arweave offers a solution by allowing users to permanently store data for a one-time fee, ensuring its integrity and accessibility. The market for cloud data storage is significant and rapidly growing, with a projected market size of almost $400 billion by 2029.

The Permaweb

Arweave's decentralized storage enables developers to build dApps on top of it, just like applications are built on top of the internet. This allows protocols to offer a range of services, such as email, website hosting, document storage, and more. The ecosystem built on top of Arweave is known as the "Permaweb", and these services have already been developed. In comparison to the traditional internet, which has well-known apps like Gmail for email, GoDaddy for website hosting, and Dropbox for file storage, Arweave offers dApps like Weavemail, Spheron, and ArDrive for the same purposes. Arweave offers a potential alternative with the advantages of immutability and centralized censorship resistance

Arweave's capacity and usage have grown rapidly, driven largely by the storage of NFT metadata. Over 100 TiBs of data is currently stored on Arweave, a significant portion of which is used to decentralize other areas of the cryptocurrency industry. These include hosting DeFi frontends and NFTs. For comparison, Apple iCloud reportedly hosts over 7 million TiBs. The sharp increase in storage at the end of 2021 coincides with the peak of the NFT craze and the launch of Metaplex's Candy Machine, a framework for creating NFTs on Solana that uses Arweave.
