BitMEX research studies the history of Ripple, disputes between the founders and partners, control over the $XRP tokens, and the technology behind Ripple. Their research concludes that the "distributed consensus mechanism" used by Ripple for XRP tokens doesn’t serve a clear purpose because the default behavior of nodes "effectively hands full control over updating the ledger to the Ripple.com server." In the view of BitMEX's research team, "Ripple does not appear to share many of the potentially interesting characteristics of other decentralized projects like Bitcoin and Ethereum from a technical perspective.
