What defines a cryptocurrency? Many cyrptos do not even meet the basic Bitcoin ($BTC) requirements: a lack of anonymity due to centralization draws a distinction between the first crypto and all others. Systems like Ripple ($XRP), Stellar ($XLM), and EOS ($EOS) have either intentionally designed governance models to function in a centrally organized manner or induced them through poor governance decisions. Calling them cryptocurrencies is often generous. Going forward, the cryptocurrency market needs to address how different tokens are labeled based on their features and limitations.
