Nonce patterns in Monero ($XMR) hash mining expose concentrations of ASIC mining overtime. As of now, some 85% of the hash rate is by ASICs. Before last April's hardfork, ASICs left thick white bans across the nonce range, indicating non-randomness in a random system. In June, these bands appeared again, but only to a degree: ASIC manufacturers were learning to mask ASIC mining activity by implementing random nonce picking. After the October hardfork, the same story played out again: non-ASIC miners surged for a few months, only to be cut out as ASIC manufacturers adjusted. Once again, the hashrate is dominated by ASICs.
