Threshold Network is a blockchain protocol focused on digital privacy and interoperability. It offers solutions like cryptography for secure transactions and cross-chain bridges for communication between different blockchains.
Keep Network and NuCypher independently emerged as privacy protocols with a similar goal: securing users' private data on public blockchains. Keep, launched in 2017, specializes in encrypting and storing private data on off-chain containers, easily accessible by smart contracts while barring a compromise of users' privacy. NuCypher, through its cryptographic infrastructure, provides privacy tools that manage secrets across dynamic environments, allow/deny access to sensitive data, and process encrypted data while preserving confidentiality.
In March 2021, the teams of both protocols presented a proposal to their communities - an on-chain hard merger that would see NuCypher's privacy tools run on top of Keep's infrastructure, creating more room for censorship-resistance, user privacy and decentralization. By June 2021, the merger proposal, codenamed KEaNU, was voted in and the merging process kicked off.
Through the following months, the smart contracts for the Threshold network were audited by ChainSecurity and Certik, a governance structure modelled after Compound's GovernorBravo was set up and implemented, and the T token became available for NU and KEEP holders to wrap.
It is important to note that although the two teams are now collaborating on developing the Threshold network, the legacy networks would continue to exist independently. As such, stakers and other participants of the Keep and NuCypher network may choose to remain on their original networks and opt into Threshold when they feel comfortable doing so.
