Ordinals is a "digital artifacts" project built on Bitcoin. The protocol has an onchain method of serializing (numbering) individual satoshis (the smallest unit of BTC) by storing the data ("inscription") in the witness space of Bitcoin blocks. Each satoshi is assigned a unique ordinal number based on its position in the blockchain. This allows for the creation of unique, Bitcoin-native digital artifacts by embedding arbitrary data, such as text or images, onto these satoshis.
BRC-20, an experimental fungible token standard built on Bitcoin, was launched in March 2023 by its pseudonymous creator, Domo. ORDI was the first BRC-20 token. According to the project’s documentation, Domo describes their motivation for the project as “a fun experimental standard demonstrating that you can create offchain balance states with inscriptions.”
ORDI is a meme token with no featured or planned functionality beyond being exchanged or held for speculative purposes. A commercially reasonable search found no disclosure(s) from Domo regarding intended future changes to the ORDI token.
