About

Pandora is an experimental token standard project built on Ethereum. Development revolves around ERC-404, a mixed implementation of ERC-20 (fungible tokens) and ERC-721 (non-fungible tokens, or NFTs) functionalities. Its hybrid standard aims to enable the liquidity and divisibility of the ERC-20 standard with the indivisible properties of ERC-721. The token standard has not yet been recognized by the Ethereum Foundation as an official token standard.

The ERC-404 standard allows for the fractional ownership of NFTs. While typically unique and indivisible, NFTs can be divided into smaller, tradable units under ERC-404. These units enable multiple individuals to hold a stake in a single NFT, effectively increasing the asset's liquidity. ERC-404 employs unique identifiers (IDs) for each original NFT, ensuring that despite fractionalization, the distinctiveness and traceability of each NFT are preserved. This mechanism aims to open up novel avenues for investment and ownership while preserving the provenance of the original assets.

History

Created in February 2024 by pseudonymous founders, Pandora is an experimental Ethereum token standard with mixed ERC-20 and ERC-721 functionality. On Feb. 1, 2024, Pandora announced “Replicants,” its NFT collection of “generative avatars” bound to ERC-404 PANDORA tokens. (Replicant NFT avatars have not been revealed. A post on “X” from Feb. 1, 2024, claims it will happen “soon.”)

On Feb. 2, 2024, the ERC-404 PANDORA token and its associated Replicants NFT collection were deployed on Ethereum. Upon launch, users could acquire PANDORA via Uniswap and Replicant NFTs via OpenSea.

On Feb. 9, 2024, the project team announced the release of revised code for the ERC-404 standard, including improvements to branching logic, integration for external protocols, and EIP-2612 support. These changes are labeled as “v2.0-beta.”
