Astroport is a decentralized, permissionless and open-source crypto assets exchange built on Terra ecosystem. The Astroport protocol employs an Automated Market Maker (AMM) smart contract to facilitate the exchange of any Terra asset against token liquidity pools. Astroport is a decentralized protocol governed by its community of ASTRO token holders.
The project was first announced on July 12th, 2021 in a Medium article. Astroport’s smart contracts, web application, and token ASTRO were created by the Astroport Joint Venture, an informal joint venture by Delphi Labs, We3, Attic Lab, and Terraform Labs. The unincorporated joint venture of Astroport builders was set to automatically dissolve at the start of the ASTRO drop on December 14th, 2021.
By bringing some significant updates in its AMM model, Astroport protocol is set to become the liquidity hub for the Terra DeFi ecosystem, ensuring flexibility and capital efficiency on top of decentralization and non-custody. The key features that distinguish this protocol from other DEXs, especially Terraswap, are the support for multiple curves and pool types (including Terra’s first liquidity bootstrapping pool) that optimizes capital efficiency, a powerful LPs incentive structure thanks to the dual tokens farming capability, and decentralized governance that empowers ASTRO stakers progressively with their commitment.
On December 28th, 2021, the Astroport protocol went officially live and participants were able to unlock and trade their ASTRO tokens.
