ZKsync Token Assembly: Overview and Purpose

What is the ZKsync Token Assembly?

The ZKsync Token Assembly is one of three core governance bodies that will oversee the ZKsync protocol, alongside the Security Council and Guardians, under the broader ZK Nation governance system2.

Composition and Role

  • Participants: The Token Assembly consists of ZK token holders who delegate their voting power to delegates—anyone can become a delegate, and every ZK token equals one vote2.
  • Powers: This body is responsible for proposing and voting on governance decisions which can include protocol upgrades, parameter changes, and resource allocations. It operates democratically based on token-weighted voting.
  • Governance Launch Status: As of mid-2024, the onchain governance and active roles of the Token Assembly are not yet live, but the assembly is slated to activate once onchain governance is enabled.

Token Economics and Incentives

  • Allocation: Approximately 6.15 billion ZK tokens (about 29.3% of the total supply) are reserved for the Token Assembly. This allocation is “designed to reflect the interests of the community—users, validators, developers, and projects building on ZKsync”.
  • Purpose of Funds: These tokens are intended to be distributed in alignment with community interests and will only become liquid for use after onchain governance is fully enabled4.

How It Fits Within Governance

  • The Token Assembly is a key decision-making organ, but is balanced by:
    • Security Council: Oversees technical and emergency upgrades.
    • Guardians: Holds veto power to ensure proposals align with the protocol’s values.
  • The arrangement seeks to prevent any single entity from holding excessive authority, and emphasizes checks and balances, transparency, and decentralization2.
