VeChain Improvement Proposals (VIPs)

VeChain Improvement Proposals (VIPs)

Overview

VeChain Improvement Proposals (VIPs) are the formal mechanism used to suggest changes or upgrades to the VeChainThor blockchain. They can address technical improvements, tokenomics, governance processes, and more. Anyone in the community is free to submit a VIP, although final implementation is at the discretion of the VeChain Foundation and subject to Steering Committee approval—there is no automatic or on-chain community voting process like in some other protocols2.
  • Submission: Any developer or community member can propose a VIP.
  • Review: VIPs are reviewed by the VeChain Foundation’s Steering Committee.
  • Approval: The committee has ultimate authority to accept or reject proposals; there is no purely community-driven, binding vote.
  • Incentives: The VeChain Foundation runs a VIP bounty campaign, awarding $2,000 USD per approved VIP to incentivize contributions from the community2.
  • Discussion: Proposals, reviews, and discussions happen primarily on VeChain’s official GitHub repository and associated forums3.

Governance Structure

VeChain is governed by a Steering Committee, comprising both VeChain Foundation employees and unaffiliated external members. All on-chain changes or upgrades require approval from this committee. As such, important protocol changes or tokenomic modifications must pass this centralized review.

Recent & Notable VIPs

Renaissance Upgrade (2025)

In 2025, VeChain introduced the "VeChain Renaissance," a series of significant protocol upgrades carried out through several key VIPs as part of the "Galactica," "Hayabusa," and "Interstellar" phases:

Galactica Phase VIPs

Four major VIPs were recently voted on as part of the Galactica upgrade:
  • VIP-251: Dynamic fee market, modeled after Ethereum's EIP-1559 for more predictable and efficient transaction fees.
  • VIP-252: Standardized transaction formats to improve interoperability.
  • VIP-242: EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) upgrade for improved compatibility with Ethereum, enhancing cross-chain and tooling support.
  • VIP-250: Improved developer tools to foster ecosystem growth45.
These upgrades target increased scalability, developer ease, and future-proofing for upcoming protocol phases. Community stakeholders (Authority, X, and Economic Node holders) participate in voting to ratify these critical VIPs6.

Hayabusa & Interstellar (2025 roadmap highlights)

  • Hayabusa Phase: VIPs to introduce updated tokenomics (staking, VTHO distribution models, consensus mechanism changes), followed by a testnet and another stakeholder vote. These changes aim to encourage Network activity and decentralize the validation process6.
  • Interstellar Phase: More enhancements and new staking opportunities are expected later in 2025.

Additional Technical Upgrades

  • Thor v2.2.0 and v2.2.1 Client Releases: These releases reflected tangible implementations from recent VIPs, improving node performance, database storage, and incorporating dynamic fees as introduced in the Galactica upgrade78.
  • Connex v2.2.x SDK upgrades supported new protocol changes and expanded developer functionality910.

How to Track and Contribute to VIPs

  • Official VIP repository: https://github.com/vechain/VIPs3
  • Participation and Discussion: Community discussion, proposal drafts, and status tracking happen via GitHub and community forums; more details are available on the VeChain Documentation "How to Contribute" page11.
  • Developer Incentives: The current grant campaigns encourage not only protocol-level proposals but also application and tooling development for the ecosystem2.

In summary: VIPs play a central role in evolving VeChain's technology and tokenomics. The 2025 Renaissance upgrades represent the most significant VIP-driven changes to date, positioning VeChain for greater scalability, interoperability, and potential mass adoption through incremental, committee-reviewed governance and incentivized developer participation2113+7.
