What are StakePools in the Phala Network?

Overview

StakePools are a core feature of the Phala Network's compute staking system. They connect computing node operators (called "workers") with PHA token holders (delegators), facilitating decentralized, permissionless staking and enabling large-scale decentralized cloud compute1234+1.

How StakePools Work

  • Pool Owners and Workers: StakePools are managed by pool owners, who can group one or more workers (computational resources) together. Each pool can attract stake from multiple delegators.
  • Staking Mechanism: PHA holders (delegators) can delegate (stake) their PHA tokens to a preferred StakePool. Workers require staked PHA in order to participate in network operations and earn rewards.
  • Parameters: Each StakePool sets parameters like commission rate (how much the pool owner takes as a fee) and a capacity cap (maximum amount of PHA that can be staked)1.
  • Reward Distribution: Delegators receive a share of rewards generated by the pool’s workers, minus the commission paid to the pool owner26.
  • Pool Quality: The quality of a StakePool is measured by its consistency and level of rewards distribution to delegators. Poor-performing pools may offer lower or no rewards, potentially destabilizing the network if not properly selected by delegators78.
  • Delegation Convenience: Phala App provides an interface for users to browse, delegate to, and manage StakePools easily. StakePools are typically sorted by Annual Percentage Rate (APR) to help users identify attractive pools5.

StakePools vs. Vaults

  • StakePools: Direct pools of PHA delegated by users, managed by a pool owner who directs rewards and operations.
  • Vaults: A higher-level pooling mechanism acting as a delegation proxy, managed by vault owners who select high-quality StakePools for collective delegation78.
  • Optionality: Delegators can choose to delegate to a StakePool directly or via a Vault for a potentially hands-off, diversified approach with performance-based delegation strategies.
