What is IPFS?
Overview
IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is an open-source, peer-to-peer protocol designed for distributed storage and sharing of data. Launched by Protocol Labs in 2015, IPFS aims to make the web faster, more secure, and decentralized by replacing the traditional, centralized web model with a distributed network—functionally similar to a global, permissionless file-sharing network

How IPFS Works
- Content Addressing: Every file added to IPFS is split into smaller pieces, cryptographically hashed, and given a unique content identifier (CID). If the content changes, so does the CID. This means data integrity is baked into how files are stored and retrieved1238+2.
- Peer-to-Peer Network: Files are stored across a network of nodes (computers). Anyone can host data, and files are retrieved based on their CID, not location. This enables robust redundancy: data remains accessible even if some nodes go offline3567.
- Immutability & Versioning: Because the CID is derived from the file content, stored data is tamper-resistant. For updatable or mutable content, IPFS uses a complementary naming system called IPNS8.
Key Benefits
- Decentralization: No single point of failure—data is resilient against outages, censorship, and attacks1345+1.
- Data Integrity: Cryptographic hashes ensure stored data can’t be altered without detection123.
- Censorship Resistance: As a distributed network, IPFS makes it much harder to censor or erase content compared to traditional web servers1347.
- Efficient Storage: Only the CID needs to be stored on blockchains, allowing for large off-chain data storage with secure links to on-chain records—especially useful for NFTs and blockchain applications279.
Use Cases
- NFTs and Digital Assets: NFTs use IPFS to store images, music, and metadata, referenced by on-chain CIDs, ensuring authenticity and persistence23810.
- Decentralized Applications (dApps): IPFS is used to host frontends of major DeFi applications, NFT marketplaces, and messengers, maintaining functionality even if traditional hosting services fail41110.
- Data Backup for Blockchains: Blockchains like Cardano and ecosystems such as U2U leverage IPFS for reliable backup, redundancy, and decentralized file delivery12131415.
Limitations and Incentives
While IPFS ensures access and integrity, it does not have a built-in incentive mechanism for nodes to store data permanently. Projects such as Filecoin address this by offering token rewards for long-term storage, creating a decentralized marketplace overlaying IPFS

Real-World Impact
IPFS is foundational to the development of the decentralized web, enabling secure, transparent, and censorship-resistant data infrastructure for web3, AI, and enterprise applications. Its ongoing adoption and ecosystem development—including integration with chains and cloud platforms—highlight its importance for the future of the internet
