What is the execution fee on Flow?

Flow Execution Fee Overview

Flow transaction fees consist of three components:
  1. Execution Fee (cost for code execution and storage interaction)
  2. Inclusion Fee (for transaction propagation and block inclusion)
  3. Surge Factor (multiplier for periods of high network activity, currently set to 1.0)

Execution Fee Details

  • The execution fee on Flow depends on the specific actions in a transaction. It charges for:
    • Regular Cadence function calls and loops
    • Reading/writing bytes from/to account storage
    • Account creation

Example Estimates (as of latest documentation1):

Transaction TypeEstimated Execution Cost (FLOW)
FT (Fungible Token) transfer0.00000185
Minting a small NFT (depends on NFT size)0.0000019
Empty transaction0.000001
Add key to an account0.000001
Create 1 new account0.00000315
Deploy ~50kb contract0.00002965
  • The unit execution cost is currently set at 0.000000249 (2.49E-7) FLOW per execution effort unit for Cadence transactions2.
  • For EVM transactions on Flow, the execution effort incorporates both Flow and EVM computations, with EVM gas usage converted to Flow execution units2.

Fee Calculation Example

A basic Cadence transaction’s execution fee can be calculated as:
Execution Fee = (Execution Effort Units) x (2.49E-7 FLOW)
Actual fees for simple token transfers or basic transactions are well below one thousandth of a FLOW1.

Important Notes

  • Execution fees can change, as they are subject to consensus/governance decisions.
  • Heavier/complex transactions (e.g., smart contract deployment, large storage writes) incur proportionally higher fees1.
  • The inclusion fee and surge multiplier both have very little impact on actual fees at this time12.
