Cabinets in the Context of BNB Staking
In the BNB Chain (BNB Smart Chain) staking mechanism, "Cabinets" are a specific group of validator nodes with special significance in the network’s Proof-of-Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus:
- Validator Election Process: Every 24 hours, 45 validator nodes are elected on BNB Smart Chain based on the total amount of BNB tokens staked to each node.
- Cabinets Defined: Of these 45 validators, the top 21 nodes with the highest staked amounts are known as "Cabinets." The remaining 24 are called "Candidates."
- Block Production: For each epoch, 18 of the 21 Cabinets and 3 of the 24 Candidates are randomly chosen to produce blocks. The selected validators take turns using a protocol based on Ethereum’s Clique consensus model12.
- Purpose: This approach aims to balance decentralization (by rotating among a relatively large set) and security (by favoring validators with the most at stake).
Key Points:
- Cabinet Role: Cabinets are always the 21 validators with the highest stake. They have a higher probability of being selected to actively produce blocks compared to Candidates.
- Consensus Security: Selecting validators from both Cabinets and Candidates helps ensure security, prevent centralization, and maintain an incentive for more nodes to join staking.
This structure is part of BNB Chain’s efforts to foster both robust security and wide participation in staking, crucial for the network’s reliability and decentralization
