What are Economic Nodes on the VeChain blockchain?

Economic Nodes on the VeChain Blockchain

Overview

Economic Nodes are a special type of node on the VeChainThor blockchain. They are not involved in block validation or consensus, but instead play a key role in the governance of the VeChain ecosystem and in distributing voting power among stakeholders234.

Key Features

  • VET Locking & NFT Representation: Anyone can lock a minimum amount of VET tokens to receive an NFT representing an Economic Node. This NFT can be transferred, auctioned, or upgraded by locking more VET to reach a higher tier34.
  • Governance & Voting: Economic Node holders collectively share 20% of the total voting authority in VeChainThor governance. The voting power is proportional to the amount of VET locked and the node's tier24.
  • No Consensus Role: Economic Nodes do not participate in the consensus mechanism (Proof of Authority). Only Authority Nodes validate transactions and produce blocks2.
  • Tiers & Requirements: There are three tiers of Economic Nodes, each with different VET requirements, voting weights, and maturity periods:
    • Strength Node: 1,000,000 VET, 10-day maturity, 1 vote
    • Thunder Node: 5,000,000 VET, 20-day maturity, 5 votes
    • Mjolnir Node: 15,000,000 VET, 30-day maturity, 15 votes4
  • Node Management: If the VET balance drops below the required threshold, the node status is lost but can be regained after a maturity period at a lower tier. Node NFTs can be upgraded by locking more VET34.

Purpose

Economic Nodes are designed to:
  • Encourage long-term holding and stability within the VeChain ecosystem
  • Distribute governance power among a broader set of stakeholders
  • Provide a mechanism for users to participate in the decision-making process of the blockchain without running validator infrastructure234.

Additional Notes

  • Economic Nodes previously earned bonus VTHO rewards, but this benefit ended in September 2021.
  • Economic X Nodes are a related but distinct program with different requirements and benefits, including a larger share of voting authority and additional VTHO rewards234.
