Gnosis Chain is an Ethereum sidechain facilitating low-cos blockchain operations. It supports validator sets and community governance, ensuring decentralized control, as well as hosts various dApps in fields like NFTs, gaming, decentralized betting, and direct funding platforms. Gnosis Chain also offers development tools and resources for developers.

History

Gnosis is a company founded in 2015 as part of ConsenSys, an Ethereum venture production studio. In April 2017, it became an independent company and is currently based in Gibraltar with a team of over 60 members worldwide, including a development hub in Berlin. The company's mission is centered around experimentation and building decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem. When it was first established, Gnosis focused on building prediction markets to provide worldwide access to accurate information. However, to support this platform, the company needed to develop the necessary infrastructure.

As a DAO, Gnosis transparently guides decisions on the development, support, and governance of its ecosystem by using the products it creates. Some of the products incubated by Gnosis include Gnosis Safe (multisig and programmable account), Cow Protocol (formerly CowSwap and Gnosis Protocol), Conditional Tokens (prediction markets), Gnosis Auction, and Zodiac (standard and tooling for composable DAOs).

In November 2021, the xDAI and GnosisDAO community voted to combine their ecosystems to create the Gnosis Chain, which is an EVM-compatible, community-owned network prioritizing credible neutrality and resiliency. It uses the xDai token and includes a diverse range of projects and users. Gnosis Chain is secured by over 100k validators worldwide and bridges to mainnet soon. It is compatible with all future EIPs and uses the same execution layer and consensus layer clients as Ethereum.
