Venezuela’s President Maduro has laid out plans to use the controversial Petro token for oil sales starting in 2019. Maduro plans to use the Petro to minimize the influence of the U.S. dollar and diversify global markets, which is important for a country that is currently subject to U.S. sanctions. Earlier this year Maduro announced that the sovereign currency, the bolivar would be pegged to the Petro. Citizens are able to purchase the token via a government portal and is becoming more integrated into various government services.
