By analyzing public records research firm Diar found $5.7 million was spent by U.S. government agencies looking to track cryptocurrency usage. Agencies use these services for various reasons but mainly to trace the identity of individual crypto users. Unsurprisingly, the top spender among was the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which signed nine contracts with cryptocurrency forensics providers worth just under $2.2 million, or 38 percent of the government’s total spending on these services.
