According to survey data collected in Q2 and Q3 2018, South Africa leads the world cryptocurrency ownership by internet users. While the global average and U.S. average sit at 5.5% and 5.3% respectively, South Africa stands at 10.7%. Interestingly, South Africa has the highest income inequality worldwide, leading to BREAKERMAG's correlation between access to traditional banking and cryptocurrency adoption.
