Reddit partners with Ethereum Foundation and asks the Ethereum community for scaling support
In a Reddit post on r/Ethereum, Reddit has asked the Ethereum community at large for assistance finding a scaling solution for Reddit’s Community Points initiative. Teams must submit their demo in the comments of this post by July 31, 2020. Demos have to simulate scaling for 100,000 users and meet a list of other requirements. As per Reddit “to be clear, there is no prize if your solution is chosen or modified to meet Reddit’s needs. Our lawyer made us write this."
Why it matters:
- Reddit is the first major platform that would bring millions of users to Ethereum. If Ethereum can handle the scaling requirements for Reddit and succeed it will likely encourage other applications to heavily consider Ethereum over other smart contract protocols.
- This situation presents an interesting experiment regarding community incentives. The community has a unique incentive to help solve the solution for Reddit even without being rewarded. Without a native cryptocurrency held by thousands of users, the incentive to help Reddit for free would be drastically diminished.
