In the competition to build a preeminent rates market on Solana, RateX is the frontrunner. Evidenced by Pendle’s success on the EVM, having eclipsed $7B in liquidity, markets to trade fixed-yielding principal tokens (PTs) and variable-yielding yield tokens (YTs) have demonstrated strong product market fit. PTs and YTs offer highly attractive instruments for locking in fixed yield, speculating on forward rates, hedging, and airdrop farming. Coupled with this, providing liquidity on these markets can offer yields in excess of the underlying instrument’s carry, with little to no risk of impermanent loss, offering compelling venues for liquidity provision.
RateX is the largest mover to offer a yield market on Solana for trading PTs and YTs, and has found success with listings of Solana liquid restaking tokens (solLRTs), Jupiter’s liquidity provider token (JLP), and USDe/sUSDe. Dissimilar to Pendle, RateX adds margin trading for the ability to long and short YTs on leverage, where margin is posted in the underlying yield-bearing asset (YBA). Liquidity on RateX grew notably over the past 4 months, starting from less than $5M to eclipsing over $50M.
RateX is currently working on a v2 upgrade to be shipped mid-2025. This upgrade will implement a classical interest rate swap market, allowing for the inbounding of any yield-bearing asset, onchain or offchain, via an oracle. The upgrade will present a direct competitor to Pendle’s current plans with Boros. In the interest rate swap market, traders can pay a floating rate to receive a fixed rate, or pay a fixed rate to receive a floating rate, on margin. The upgrade will dramatically expand the addressable market for the project, and should it see success, liquidity and volumes on the platform could grow notably.
Currently, an integration is pending with Kamino to list RateX’s PTs as collateral on Kamino Lend and Multiply. This integration would broaden the utility and composability of RateX instruments across Solana DeFi, and could serve as a catalyst for further utilization and growth in platform liquidity.
RateX was the first place winner of the 2024 Solana Renaissance MCM hackathon. The project is currently pre-token and running a points program to incentivize liquidity and volume in advance of a TGE, slated for 2H 2025. Providing liquidity on RateX for sUSDe, JLP, or various solLRTs could be an effective strategy for earning a yield in excess of the underlying instruments’ carry while accruing points for an eventual RateX airdrop.
