PUMP’s TGE & Launchpad Wars: It’s All About The Front-End

TGE

The biggest incremental new news coming from the Pump TGE announcement were a) the private sale for institutional purchaser allocation, b) the 25% token buyback, and c) an acquisition that will be announced soon.

Institutional purchasers. Weeks back, we heard the private sale to institutional investors would be $100M, then we heard $200M, then $300M, and today we sit at $720M in fresh new investor capital. We’ve long believed that >99% of crypto was intellectually short Pump & memecoins as a product. But given the strong institutional demand, we think that Pump’s earning power post-Libra turned a lot of heads and changed a lot of minds. Admittedly, we think it’s clear that a bet on PUMP is no longer as contrarian as it once was.

25% buyback. We think there are pros and cons to the buyback. On the con side, Pump is clearly still early stage with an ambitious team and low cash burn. Ideally, we’d want money capital deployed into growth. On the pro side, token markets are increasingly focused on value capture in 2025 - modern crypto markets are increasingly wary of low float/high FDV and weak value capture for project tokens (e.g. Zora). Within this context, it’s possible that the market would punish PUMP if there were no value accrual mechanism. We’ve heard the buyback will be discretionary and not programmatic, which we like.

Acquisitions. We’ve long speculated that Pump may make strategic acquisitions after its raise. We think Telegram trading apps, explorers like Birdeye, or even a low cap or distressed US-based exchange for the license, may be a potential candidate.

Ultimately, we think the Jupiter acquisition model makes the most sense, where small crypto-native properties are acquired over time to build out a more holistic bundle. This would be prudent, as acquiring niche players or laggards would be cost effective, Pump’s newly acquired engineering talent could be used to integrate and build out new features, and Pump’s brand power could drive their usage. We think this is preferable to a splashy, high dollar value acquisition.
