Over 300,000 ETH domains will expire this year, 77% to be released Aug 1

77% of registered ENS .eth domains are up for renewal on Aug 1, 2020.

ENS which originally launched in 2017 has 62% of its .eth domains that are now coming up for the first massive renewal phase. Of registered names, 77% will be released in a matter of days.

77%!!! That’s staggering.

There have been over 445,934 .eth names created with 359,396 of those registered and as of this writing 279,166 names up for release on Aug 1, 2020. That means, if you have a .eth address in mind, it’s probably up for grabs.

This is going to be the single most important day in the history of the Ethereum Name Service. Tens of thousands of addresses were initially purchased in 2017 with the idea that – similar to dot com addresses or 1-800 numbers – they would be worth more in the future. Most of those people were either a) too early or b) wrong.

What’s in a name: the cost of renewal
