Before jumping in to Magic Eden specifically, let’s review prior case studies in NFT marketplace tokens and their relation to Magic Eden’s standing today.
Blur’s launch completely reshaped the EVM NFT market, quickly gaining market share from a stagnant OpenSea. Today, Blur consistently dominates overall EVM chain NFT volumes. Yet despite Blur’s takeover of EVM NFTs and maintaining that position successfully post-airdrop, the BLUR token has only declined. The token reached north of $1 within a week of TGE but today trades at less than $0.2, or an FDV less than $600M. Notably, the highest period of total trading activity on Blur occurred in the month immediately following the BLUR TGE in February 2023.
As a more direct competitor to Magic Eden,Tensor on Solana serves as another meaningful case study for comparison. Tensor focused heavily on catering specifically to Solana NFT traders in direct contrast to Magic Eden’s multichain approach. Prior to either marketplace launching a token, Tensor rose to dominance in Solana NFT volumes and was facilitating upwards of $50M in weekly volume in early 2024. Around the launch of the TNSR token in April however, Magic Eden reclaimed the top spot for Solana NFT volumes. This was likely partially fueled by a loss of incentives for Tensor trading due to confirmation of the token as well as the fact that Magic Eden’s Diamonds points program had just begun in late January.
Similar to BLUR, the TNSR token has been heavily beaten down over the past several months following its TGE in April; the token is down over 80% from all time highs with a greatly reduced market share from launch. In contrast to BLUR however, Tensor lost the dominant position in Solana NFTs near the $TNSR TGE to Magic Eden. Had Magic Eden launched their token first, it would not be unreasonable to assume that activity may have shifted in Tensor’s favor instead. The post-airdrop activity drop off is a dynamic seen across the crypto space; Starknet is a strong example. In addition, weekly NFT volumes on Solana are also down over 80% from a high near $100M in March, now down to levels not seen since the lows of Q2 and Q3 of 2023. This level of activity could once again mark a bottom for the category and allow the strongest platform to recapture a significant share of the market.
Despite the fierce competition with Tensor, Solana is not Magic Eden’s most dominant market. Magic Eden's pivot towards Bitcoin and the Bitcoin ecosystem was very successful. Despite being the fourth most popular NFT ecosystem based on active addresses and volume traded over the past 30 days, the Bitcoin ecosystem generated the second highest trading revenue - which represents 30% of trading revenue on NFTs across crypto. Additionally, Magic Eden controls upwards of 99% of trading revenues on Bitcoin. Over the past 30 days, the protocol has made $900K in revenue and over the past year they've made nearly $40M from Bitcoin trading. However, while their trailing revenues are strong, the excitement and activity around Bitcoin NFTs, along with NFT trading activity across the board, has dwindled significantly into H2 of this year.
