EigenLayer is introducing a new security model for the upcoming slashing feature, centered around three key concepts: Operator Sets, Total Stake, and Unique Stake. This model aims to enhance the efficiency and economic alignment of Actively Validated Services (AVSs).
Operator Sets - Operator Sets are the foundation of EigenLayer's security model. These sets consist of operators who have received ETH delegations from stakers and are tasked with specific responsibilities by AVSs. AVSs have the flexibility to establish multiple Operator Sets, and operators must actively seek inclusion in these sets. The performance of operators within these sets is closely monitored, with AVSs having the authority to distribute rewards for successful task completion or impose penalties for subpar performance.
Total Stake - Total Stake represents the cumulative amount of ETH entrusted to an operator through delegation. When considering an entire Operator Set, the Total Stake is calculated by summing up the individual Total Stakes of all operators within that set. To illustrate, if an Operator Set comprises three operators, each with 100 ETH delegated to them, the Total Stake for that set would amount to 300 ETH. This metric provides a clear indication of the overall trust and investment placed in a particular operator or set.
Unique Stake - Unique Stake introduces a nuanced layer of risk management to the system. It refers to the portion of an operator's Total Stake that they allocate for potential slashing by a specific Operator Set. This allocation must fall within the range of 0% to 100% of the operator's Total Stake. The Unique Stake of an entire Operator Set is determined by adding up the Unique Stakes of all its constituent operators. For instance, in a set with three operators, each having 100 ETH Total Stake, if they allocate 0%, 10%, and 20% respectively as Unique Stake, the Operator Set's total Unique Stake would be 30 ETH. This mechanism allows for more precise control over slashing risks and incentives within the system.
