Coinbase releases Rosetta middleware API

Today, Coinbase launched Rosetta, an open standard and set of tools that makes integrating with blockchain networks faster, simpler, and more reliable. Rosetta is essentially an API that can connect to various blockchain nodes and enables a developer to access a blockchain’s data. The Rosetta API allows an application to read on-chain data and construct transactions in a standard data format. This minimizes the amount of code required, reduces integration complexity, and simplifies maintenance.

Why it matters:

  • Since the code is open-source, other exchanges and platforms will be able to adopt the Rosetta standard which may help bridge interoperability and improve coordination.
  • As more blockchain networks are connected to Rosetta, adding the native token to a cryptocurrency exchange like Coinbase will become easier from a technical standpoint.
  • Coinbase appears committed to continuing the development of Rosetta and release a wallet API in the future.
