In efforts to stabilize the economy, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has lopped five zeros off the bolivar, introduced new bills, and linked the new bolivar’s value to the national oil-linked petro cryptocurrency amidst its economic crisis. Last month, the International Monetary Fund warned Venezuela’s economy is expected to contract by around 18% in 2018, while inflation is forecast to reach 1,000,000%. People in the country struggling with the level of inflation are opting to use Bitcoin ($BTC) and cryptocurrencies as an alternative.
