[Analysis] The most expensive lesson of my life: details of SIM port hack - Sean Coonce

BitGo's Sean Coonce recently fell prey to a SIM port hack wherein a hacker uses one's personal information to gain access to your SIM card, email via 2FA, and then tertiary accounts linked to your email. Losing a significant amount of money, Coone advised his reader's to follow these best practices for securing private information and crypto going forward:

  1. Use a hardware wallet to store coins: an exchange is not a bank and cannot secure your losses like you yourself can.
  2. Limit sharing personal data, particularly data with geographic information.
  3. Use Google Voice or other phone service's without a SIM card for 2FA, if at all.
  4. Create a secondary email for private and financial arrangements. The more hidden, the better.
  5. Store passwords on a secured device, preferably off your computer but on a device.
